Dear Robert Daniell and other Daniel family members-
my name is Susan Aldridge and I am not related to you, but I try to help people who are looking for ancestors.
There is a man of African American descent Tyrone DeNeal who wrote to the Russell Co AL yahoo group to inquire about any knowledge of slaves in the Daniell DaNeal Daneil families of Russell co.AL - I spent 30 hours online sorting thru census records and so forth (I do my work out of Germany). When I finally had enough data to ascertain who Laurence Daniell of Russell Co. 1860 was- after hours of taking notes and making comparisons- I came up with your data on VARIOUS DANIELS in your family including the ones who immigrated to VA (William O Daniel) SC (James (O) Daniel) GA (Levi and John Daniel) AL (James L Daniel and half brother Levi Laurence Daniel) FL (various others). Your research is invaluable for the search for African American genealogy. My hat goes off to you. My data and notes can be forwarded to you (includes typing errors).

In general, it looks like a large part of the Daniel/Daniell/Deniell family moved from Island (Eiland family name) Creek, Hancock Co GA and Washington Co Ga about 1837 to Glenville, Alabama (which at one time was part of Barbour Co and later Russell Co, so that apparently a new line was drawn between some close lying Daniell plantations which were originally in one county, making it appear as if the Daniell inhabitants had moved from one county to another) where the 1837 AL births start to occur. James Daniell b 1721 VA had died in 1798, his son Levy/Levi died 10 Dec 1800 and his nephew John Daniell in 1827.

I started out with looking for slave holder Daniel families in Russell Co AL. I found H. Daniel and Laurence Daniel in 1860. Laurence was worth 49,000 dollars in that year and had 37 slaves. I was lucky enough to find him in 1850 under Levi L. Daniel in Barbour Co. His older half brother´s widow is there also-Eliza Clements Butts Daniel who was married in Hancock Co. She had married James L. Daniell who died before the 1850 census and is buried Russell Co near Glenville:

"Daniell, Jas. L. 11 July 1797 Hancock CO, GA 14 April 1846 age 48 years, 9 mo 3 days.".

In 1840 he is in Russell Co. His mother Martha Pearson Cook Daniel b 27 Mar 1777 at Broad River, Cook's Ferry, South Carolina, married in Hancock GA 11 Sep 1796, died in Russell:

"Daniell, Martha P. died 9 Sept 1842, age 65 years and buried Mitchell place, west of Glenville Plantation" in Russell Co and she had moved with other Hancock Co GA neighbors to Glenville, Russel County, Alabama where she spent the rest of her days which may have been 5-10 years. info in yellow Helen Leino

She was still listed in Hancock Co GA in 1830 with her six children by her second husband (John Daniel b: 2 FEB 1778 in Fairfield Co. , SC Married: 6 OCT 1803 died 29 Oct 1827-cousin to Levi her first husband) who had fallen from a horse and died after 17 hours. In 1840 she was supposedly in Russell but I could not find her- she is probably with relatives-could be with the MItchells since she is buried at Mitchell Place Cem

There were however 2 Daniels left back in 1840 Hancock Co GA which may have been probable sons- a Benjamin F. Daniel and a David, and according to the will of her second husband John, there are 6 children by this marriage-unnamed. In 1830 she has 5 boys and one girl. The girl is defintely

The Daniel family said that her husband John Jack had adopted a child of Levi´s sister and I notice you mention that Levi did provide for Jesse in his will- and that would explain his name change which you mention:
"Jesse Daniell was born Jesse (middle name Daniell) Auston. He was born September 9, 1794 to Betty Daniell daughter of Jesse(Jose) Daniell (son of James 1721 VA) and Nancy Hardwick." Parentheses mine.

Levi Daniell b 1759 SC, son of James Daniell who died in Island Creek, Hancock (will was proven March 5, 1798 in Sparta GA) also did not live very long, dying in 1800 after producing only 3 children with Martha Pearson Cook--but he seems a very respectable person and one who had acquired a vast amount of wealth, probably thru his father James who had moved to Island Creek, Hancock Co GA in 1790 according to you.In his will, James also refers to land in Washinton Co and so searches for family should also include this county.

On October 27, 1821 John G. Scruggs of Savannah, GA wrote to Tobias Rudulph III. "You have no doubt heard of the death of M. J. Rudulph who was shot dead in his own hoose (sic) on the night of the 21 July by a man by the name of James B. Collier. Michael had taken the ungrateful wretch in when he was destitute of the common necessities of life. He had clothed him and fed him for 6 or 7 months when he destroyed the hand that raised him from wretchedness and ruin."[rudulph2.ftw]

Father: Michael RUDULPH b: 15 Jan 1758 in Belle Hill Farm near Elkton, MD d. 1795 supposely drowned at sea but there is evidence to the contrary that he sailed for France and joined the military there, Capt in the Rev War. Letter written to Gen. Anthony Wayne:In 1793 after he resigned from the Army, he sailed as super cargo out of Baltimore bound for the West Indies. The cargo was tobacco. The ship's owner was Robert Hart and her captain was
Joseph Fort. He was never heard of by his family again. Sarah returned to Savannah. In 1819 his hiers, under the guidance of Tobias Rudulph III and James Sewall declared him dead.
In a letter to Gen. Wayne, 1/14/1793, Michael asked for leave of absence for all the month of March, stating "From my last advice from Maryland, I am much concerned for my domestic affairs there, I had not more than a fortnight with my family after my arrival with them, from Georgia ye first June last ..." It seems that Sarah, Michael's wife, was very attractive and admired by the officers of Lee's Legion. Michael got word of one particular person by the name of Noble Hamm and returned to Elkton and challenged him to a duel as was the custom of the day. Noble Hamm died as a result.


Michael resigned from the Army 7/17/1793, and shortly after is said to have set sail for the West Indies on a ship loaded with tobacco. It is said that the ship was lost at sea and Michael presumably drowned. However it is said that the ship actually sailed for France arriving there just before a Marshall Ney appeared with the French Army.

It is said that Marshall Ney knew English perfectly and was called by his
fellow officers "The American Tobacco Merchant". Michael could speak
German and French, these languages being in his family, Michael Johannes
Rudulph Michael Johannes RUDULPH b: Abt. 1696 in Prussia and wife Anna being from Alsace Lorraine (western side of the Rhine River) in Prussia but he may have been stationed near Hesse-Kassel (Kurhessen) where 2 major military raods crossed. Michael would have been pronounced as Meshall.

When reports circulated of Marshall Ney and Michael being one in the
same, Zebulon Rudulph, Sr., his half brother, got a picture of Marshall
Ney and looked it over carefully. There are conflicting stories of what
he thought. One said he did not think it looked like Michael but John
Barratt Rudulph, grandson of Zebulon, Sr. said that Zebulon identified
the Marshall as Michael. After Napolean escaped from Elba, Ney left
Paris to oppose him. Instead, he joined with his old leader and fought
on with him at Waterloo. He then was captured and was supposedly shot by

Notes
The main slave holders in 1860 Russell are Laurence Daniel and H.
Daniel. The Daniel family of Hancock Ga says Martha moved to Russell
in the 1830s and there is a James Daniel there in 1840. Her first born
son is James L. Daniel and his father was Levi Daniel b 1759 of
Charleston. Her 2nd husband was John Furmann Daniel, cousin to Levi
Daniel of Charleston, Sc and Hancock Co, GA. The Barbour Co AL
Daniells are related to the Russell Co AL Daniells. The widow of
Levi Daniel and of his cousin John Furmann Daniell (son of William Daniell)came to Russell Co
AL between 1830 and 1840. I am not sure where she was with her
children in the 1840 census -maybe with a daughter. Till 1830 she is
in Hancock Co GA. There is a James Daniel in 1840 Russell. That is
her son.
Notes for Martha Pearson Cook:
"Martha Pearson Cook was born 27 March 1777, her father being Capt.
John Cook and her mother being his second wife Martha Pearson Cook.
She was raised on the Broad River in what is now Fairfield County, SC,
on their homestead, Cooks Ferry. Sometime after 1790, the Cooks moved
to Hancock County Georgia and started over again. Martha Married Levi Daniell in 1796 and bore him three children before Levi died in 1800.

His father may have been James Daniel b: 1721 in Stafford Co., VA She
remaried to his cousin, John (Jack) Daniel (Born: 2 Feb 1778) in 1803,
making her Martha Pearson Cook Daniell Daniel (a genealogy joke).
There were six children born of this second union and I believe Jack
and Martha adopted one of Levi's sisters children also. " heino@erols.com

Jack inherited a 3000 acre plantation thru his marriage to his
cousin´s widow Martha Pearson Cook Daniel. In his will he refers to 2
plantations and to 6 unnamed children. Jack was thrown from his horse
and killed in 1827, leaving her a widow again. Sometime in the1830's,
Martha, her children, and a number of Hancock County neighbors move to
Glenville, Russel County, Alabama where she spends the rest ofher
days. It is said the Barbour Co Daniels came in 1837.

Another DOB is for Martha is 3/27/1774 in the National Society of
Colonial Dames"John Raiford "application.

decd,was produced in Court and the due and legal execution thereof by
saidtestator having been sufficiently proven by the evidence of Thomas
W.Burton and Charity Burton, two of the subscribing and attesting
witnesses thereto. It is ordered that said will be admitted to record.

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Daniel of the County of Hancock
andthe State of Georgia, being of sound and disposing mind and memory
andtaking into consideration the uncertainty of human life, do for the
future welfare and ____ of my family make, constitute and ordain
thismy last will and testament as follows.
It is my will and desire that all the Negroes of which I may be
possessed, together with every other species of personal
propertyshould be kept together upon my two plantations, vis, the
plantationon which I now live, and ___ Mill (?) place for the natural
benefit of my wife and children, unless it be that by this person on
whom theexecution of this will may devolve (?) , to rent one of said
plantations and work all my hands on the other. And it is further my
said desire that both my said plantations sould be kept in good repair
for cropping whether rented or not; and the particular profits arising
from crops shall be applied to the use of my wife and the caring and
education of my children share and share alike.
It is my will and desire that when my wife marries or any of my
children arrive at the age of twenty one years or marry, they or
either of them upon the happening of such event shall be entitled
adistributive share of my whole personal estate , and should it suit
the convenience of my children after receiving a share of my personal
estate as above mentioned, shall be at liberty to work their hands
onany part of my lands, rent free.
It is my will that if the produce of my hands and plantations by
renting or cropping should be more than sufficient for the maintenance
and education of my family, such surplus money shall be put tointerest
or laid out for such property as will most advance thewelfare of my
family.
It is further my will that my real estate shall not be divided untilmy
youngest child arrives at full age or marries.
It is also my particular will and desire that neither my real or
personal estate shall vest in my children until they arrive at the
ageof twenty one years or marry, after the happening of either of
which said events it is my will and desire that an equal portion of my
realand personal estate shall be vested in them, their heirs and
assignsforever.
My will further is that what money I have may or shall be advanced to
the education and improvement of my two elder children now at
schoolshall be considered as part of their Moiety of my estate and
theyshall account for the same to the managers of my estate. And that
my friend James L. Daniel take upon himself the administration of this
my last will and testament.

Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of us the 25th day ofApril

James L. Daniel, nominated executor or the last will and testament
of John Daniel, decd appeared personally in court and was duly
qualified as executor of said will and thereupon letters testamentary
were issued to him in the premises.
On application of James L. Daniel, executor of John Daniel, decd, itis
ordered that George River, Aaron Smith, John Hubert, Joseph
P.McCulloh, and Thomas W. Burton be and they are hereby
appointedappraisers of the personal property of the said decd, and
that they or any three or more of them after being duly sworn, do
appraise said property and deliver the appraisement thereof to said
executor."

The "Furman" middle name is not documented. It does appear
twogenerations later in one of his brother's children.

James L. Daniel was the first child of Levi Daniel. James was born 10
months after his parents marriage in Hancock GA. Two sisters followed:
Catherine Daniel F 4 Mar 1799 in [city], Hancock, GA, USA Edit Edit
Juliet Anna Daniel F 15 Oct 1800 in [city], Hancock, GA, USA
James L. married Eliza Clements Butts. At first they were in Russell,
then in Barbour Co AL.

Another must have been Levi Laurence Daniel b 1817 in GA. He appears
first in Barbour 1850, then in Russell 1860 and Crenshaw 1870,
impoverished.

1830 Martha Daniel has 5 boys ( 2 of age 10 and under 15, 2 of age 15
and under 20, 1 of 20 and under 30) and a girl 18 and under 20 and
Martha is between 50 and 60 as proven.

Letter from Tyrone
My name is Tyrone DeNeal. I am doing some research on my family
history. I am African American and I have traced my family back to
the 1870 Census.

The person I believe to be my g-g grandfather is named Gabe DeNeal.
In the 1870 census he is listed as Gabe Daniel along with is wife-
Betsy and Son -John and they lived in Marvyn, Russell County, Alabama
with a Columbus, GA post office box. Gabe Daniel is listed as a
mulatto.

Also, listed in the 1870 census is who I believe is my g-g-g
grandmother. Her name is Helen Shadwick and her husband is Isaac.
Helen and Isaac live next door to Gabe Daniel.

In the 1880 census Gabe is shown as Gabe D'Neal along with his wife
who now shown as Bettie. Their son John is now 11 and they have
several other children.

One of his son's is named George my g grand father. Also, listed is
an older son by another woman Walter who is 13 years old. My father
who is still living knew my g grandfather and Walter as well all his
aunts and uncles.

Also, Helen and Isaac are still living next door in the 1880 census.
However they are listed as Ellin and Ike Shadwick. In the 1900 census
Ellen Shadwick is in Gabe DeNeal's household and listed as his mother.

I am reasonably certain that this is my family. However, up to now I
have beenfocused on the DeNeal and DeNeale families from Virginia as
the connection to my family. My ggg grand mother Ellen (not sure of
her maiden name) Shadwick was born in Virginia around 1826 and her
son Gabe was born in Virginia around 1847. Ellen's husband Isaac was
born in South Carolina.

My hypothesis is Ellen and her son Gabe were owned by a DeNeale,
DeNeal, Daniel or Daniell family and were moved from Virginia>South
Carolina>Georgia >Alabama.

In the 1850 Slave census slave schedule it shows several Daniel or
Daniell slave owners in the Georgia and Alabama areas.

Questions:
1) What information do you have on Daniel or Daniell slave ownership
in Marvyn, Russell County, Alabama? Bill of sales, Wills and
Testaments, Plantations

2) What information do you have on any children born from slave
master and slave relationships?

I think alot of the families I mention below could be related. Do find out if Marvyn is far from Mitchell Place, west of Glenville Plantation, Russell County,Alabama where a Daniell slave owner is buried. I found a lead to Russell Co. which I consider legitimate because Laurences´s full name was Levi L. Danniel. Levi Denniel b 1759 Charleston, SC could be his grandfather, and that Levi of SC is also the father of first born son of wife Martha Cook -James Levi Daniell born 11 JUL 1797 (exactly 10 months after his parents marriage) in Hancock Co, Ga. So I think there are only 2 possibilities for the parentage of Levi Laurence Denniel. One is James L. Denniell born 1797 in Hancock, GA. The other is Martha Cook´s second husband John Furman Deniell, a cousin to Levi of SC. After he died in 1827, she moved at some point to Russell Co-and it could be they had already owned some land there, as well as in GA.

Notes for Martha Pearson Cook:
Martha Pearson Cook was born 27 March 1777, her fater being Capt. John Cook and her mother being his second wife Martha Pearson Cook. She war raised on the Broad River in what is now Fairfield County, SC, ontheir homestead, Cooks Ferry. Sometime after 1790, the Cooks moved to Hancock County Georgia and started over again. Martha Married Levi Daniell in 1796 and bore him three children before Levi died in 1800. She remaried to his cousin, John (Jack) Daniel in 1803, making her Martha Pearson Cook Daniell Daniel (a genealogy joke). There were six children born of this second union and I believe Jack and Martha adopted one of Levi's sisters children also. Jack was thrown from his horse and killed in 1827, leaving her a widow again. Sometime in the 1830's, Martha, her children, and a number of Hancock County neighbors move to Glenville, Russel County, Alabama where she spends the rest ofher days. (NOte from Susan Aldridge: I think that Levi Laurence Daniel b 1817 GA must be one of his 6 children.)

In ancestry.com's gene pool records, this marriage takes place in Glenville, Russell County Alabama on the same date. It is not referenced. I doubt that there was anyone but Indians and traders there this early. Hancock County is much more likely.

According to an obituary quoted by Bob Daniell, John died 29 Oct 1827in Hancock County Georgia, as a result of a fall from his horse. Helived for seventeen hours after being injured and was survived by hiswife and six children. He was referred to as "A worthy citizen". Hislifespan was 49 years, 8 months, 27 days.

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Daniel of the County of Hancock and the State of Georgia, being of sound and disposing mind and memory and taking into consideration the uncertainty of human life, do for the future welfare and ____ of my family make, constitute and ordain this my last will and testament as follows.
It is my will and desire that all the Negroes of which I may be possessed, together with every other species of personal property should be kept together upon my two plantations, vis, the plantation on which I now live, and ___ Mill (?) place for the natural benefit of my wife and children, unless it be that by this person on whom the execution of this will may devolve (?) , to rent one of said plantations and work all my hands on the other. And it is further my said desire that both my said plantations sould be kept in good repair for cropping whether rented or not; and the particular profits arising from crops shall be applied to the use of my wife and the caring and education of my children share and share alike.
It is my will and desire that when my wife marries or any of my children arrive at the age of twenty one years or marry, they or either of them upon the happening of such event shall be entitled a distributive share of my whole personal estate , and should it suit the convenience of my children after receiving a share of my personalestate as above mentioned, shall be at liberty to work their hands on any part of my lands, rent free.
It is my will that if the produce of my hands and plantations by renting or cropping should be more than sufficient for the maintenance and education of my family, such surplus money shall be put to interest or laid out for such property as will most advance the welfare of my family.
It is further my will that my real estate shall not be divided until my youngest child arrives at full age or marries.
It is also my particular will and desire that neither my real or personal estate shall vest in my children until they arrive at the age of twenty one years or marry, after the happening of either of which said events it is my will and desire that an equal portion of my real and personal estate shall be vested in them, their heirs and assignsforever.

William O'DANIEL (1691?-1728?)
William O'Daniel came to Virginia in the early 1700s. O'Daniel was primarily in Clare, Donegal, Tipperary and Galway Counties of Ireland. All of those are in central Ireland with Galway being a seaside county.
From Robert Daniell of Panama City, Florida:
"William O'DANIEL (1691?-ante 1757) of Accotink Run, Stafford County, Virginia, makes his only appearance on the surviving records as grantee from the Proprietors of the Northern Neck." (Fairfax Harrison, Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Volume I, page 164). In a footnote, Harrison states that William was "probably a recent immigrant." More records have been discovered since that statement was first published in 1920. Hopefully, there is much still to be found...
Before 1718, William married Frances, her maiden name unknown. When each of their children were born is not known. They had six children: John (1718-1799), William (1720?-1796), James (1721-1798), Catherine (1723?-Aft 1792), Elizabeth (1725?-Bef 1755?), and Anne (1727?-Aft 1755). Named in this order in Frances' will of 6 February 1755, it may be the order of birth... Will of Frances O'Daniell Gladdin Catherine married Henry GUNNELL. Elizabeth married William SCUTT. Anne married an Unknown JONES.
William received the following land grants from the Proprietors of the Northern Neck of Virginia: Parcel 81 - O'DANIEL, WILLIAM 300 acres 19 April 1717 NN 5:159 North side main run Accotink...Parcel 103 - O'DANIELL, WILLIAM 400 acres 16 March 1724 NN A:132 South side main branch of Accotink above Elk Lick...William O'DANIEL's original home had to be on the 300 acres granted in 1717, likely near the bank of the Accotink for access to transportation... Whether or not he moved his home and family to the second land grant is not known. The two grants were about 10 miles apart as the crow flies, farther if by boat via the Accotink. "O'DANIEL's Branch" was its eastern boundary. Today, the Old Lee Highway (State Highway 237) bisects the 400 acre grant, and the Army Navy Country Club, 3315 Old Lee Hwy, in Fairfax is on this land...In a personal note, Cindy Owens wrote, "Robert, I don't connect w/ your line but wanted you to know that the land you mentioned in Stafford Co.,VA (now Fairfax County) is either very near or on the golf course property where my husband works. Its beautiful land. Just thought you'd want to know."...
William O'DANIEL's Last Will & Testament was recorded in the infamous "missing Will Book K". Efforts to reconstruct information in that Will Book by using subsequent documents shows that William's Will was written circa 1724/5 and that he likely died by 1728, leaving a widow, Frances, and six children under the age of eleven...William's will was dated 24 January 172(?) as quoted in a 1753 deed...After his death, that part of Stafford County in which William received his land grants became Prince William County in 1731, and then Fairfax County in 1742...The ubiquitous "ante 1757" frequently shown by some compilers as the date of William's death appears to be based on James O'DANIEL's sale of "100 acres left to him by the last will and testament of his father, William O'DANIEL" to Rev. Charles GREEN on August 16, 1757...
Beth Mitchell, in "Beginning at a White Oak...", McGregor and Warner, 1977, published a map of land ownership in 1760 Fairfax County...Her map names the creek as "O'DANIEL's Branch", also shown as "O'DANIEL's Run" on another map. Finding that "O'DANIEL's Branch" is called "Daniel's Run" on current maps is not surprising. In 1760, John O'DANIEL, the last to use the O'DANIEL name in Fairfax, owned 200 acres located on Accotink Creek and O'DANIEL's Branch... John wrote his Last Will & Testament on 19 January 1798. He used the O'DANIEL surname to identify himself and all his male heirs, but none of his children kept the Celtic O'...Regrettably, the name of the homestead creek changed as well. Today, both "Daniel's Run Elementary School", at 3705 Old Lee Hwy, situated on the stream, and "Daniel's Run Park" commemorate the family name...
Three male descendants of William O'DANIEL of Stafford County, Virginia migrated to South Carolina in the period 1754-1770:
Son, William, in 1754 to the Indian Creek/Broad River/Saluda River, Granney's Quarter Creek in Craven County, and White Oak Creek, the next creek North of Granney's Quarter Creek on the East side of the Wateree River, died 1796. This line became DANIEL.
Son, James, in 1754 to near Cedar Creek on the Santee (Congaree) River. He buys several hundred acres on another Cedar Creek on the Broad, near Little River. (where he was living as of the 1790 census of Camden District, Fairfield County, South Carolina); in 1774, 500 acres on Indian Creek, Clouds Creek, and the Saluda River in Ninety Six District; in 1784, 400A on on Alligator Creek in now Fairfield County, bordering, among others, William DANIEL's land. The following day William DANIEL exercised a warrant for 210A bordering some of his land and James DANIEL's land. (James later, 1798, bequeathed this tract of land on Alligator Creek to his son-in-law Dr. Robert HANDRICK, husband of his daughter Mary, also 50 acres of land on the Broad River to him and his heirs forever.) James also received bounty lands in what is now Hancock Co., GA after the RW and moved to them after 1790, died 1798. This line became DANIELL.
Grandson, William (son of John O'DANIEL of Fairfax, Virginia), in 1768 acquired 1,000 acres of land in Fairfield District adjoining his Uncle James. William married Lucretia BELL, and later acquired ownership of large interests on the waters of Little Mine Creek in Edgefield District, where he lived the rest of his life, d. 1807. This line became DANIEL.

Parris of Truro and County of Fairfax being very sick and week in body but of perfeck mind and memory and ordain this my last will & Testament Imprimus I give and bequeath to my son James DANNELL a feather Bed and furniture my Chest and Table too dishishes and fore plaits a Young heffer if any cost or truble should happen everyone of my Hears shall bare an Eqill charg acordin to chares portion. I give and Bequeath to my Dafter Ann JONES all my wearing cloughs to my son William DANNELL I give and Bequeath a Negero man Joe.
I give and Bequeath to my Daffter Catheran a Tronk and a butter Pot one Earthen dish to earthen plats. I give and Bequeath to my son John O DANNELL Anthony EVARY UOLL and all the remainder of my Estate to him and his hares for. John O'DANIEL presented Frances' will in court on 21 March 1758, "...proved by the oaths of Kitchin PRIM and Mary HAND...".
James Daniell (1721-17??)
James Daniell was born in 1721 in Stafford County, Virginia. He was the son of William and Frances O'Daniell. He lived in Fairfax County Virginia until around 1750 when he moved to Craven County, South Carolina. He was married twice. The first wife is unknown. The second is Nancy Hardwick, daughter of William Garland Hardwick and Kessiah Cynthia Parker.
A 1757 deed of sale by James of his 100 acres inherited from his father, William, in Fairfax Co, Virginia gives detail to the time James moved his family from Virginia to South Carolina. After identifying himself as "James O'DANIEL of the Province of South Carolina" in the preamble of the deed, he signs four parts of the deed as James DANIELL. According to the History of Hancock County, Georgia, page 138, "James DANIEL is thought to have been the James O'DANIEL who came to South Carolina about 1749 or 1750 from Virginia." His 8 children were likely to have been born in South Carolina.
After the 1790 South Carolina census, James moved his family to Island Creek in Hancock County, Georgia, where he and Nancy joined the Island Creek Baptist Church. He kept a home near Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, later bequeathing it to his son, Jose DANIELL. James DANIEL moved to Hancock County Georgia after the Revolution. Whether he took an active part in the War of the Revolution or was too old to do so is not known, but that he was one of those who "aided and abetted" the cause of the Americans is an established fact. His name is mentioned in the official records of South Carolina as giving aid to the Americans. He also mentions in his will, signed in 1797, his "three bounties" in Hancock County. The last will and testement for James Daniell is in the courthouse in Sparta, Georgia. His will was proved March 5, 1798. In a letter, dated October 27, 1927, to Mrs. Louisa Floyd Wilson of Macon, Georgia from the South Carolina Historical Commission, Mr. A. S. Salley, Jr. states that there is a record of pay to James DANIELL for supplies furnished to the Continental Army. "In the volume marked on the enclosed list of publications of this Commission you will find a record of pay issued to James DANIEL for supplies furnished during the Revolutionary War."

The Last Will and Testament of James DANIELL is recorded in Hancock County Will Book A, page 284:
In the name of God amen, I, James DANIELL of the state of Georgia and the county of Hancock, being weak in body but of perfect sound mind and memory and knowing the mortality of my body and that it is appointed of God for all men once to die and come to judgment, do make and ordain this my last will and testament. And as I hope to die in the Christian faith and to be buried in a Christian-like manner, there needs no further preamble. And to what worldly goods it hath pleased God to endow me with, I give and devise and bequeath in the manner and form following - and first and principally, it is my desire that all my just debts be paid without trouble? or suits of law.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my son-in-law James TAYLOR three Negroes, (viz) Jack, Hannah, and Jane to him and his heirs forever.
Item. I give and bequeath unto the heirs of my daughter Sarah and James TAYLOR five Negroes viz Hollon?, Jubiter, Abram, Solomon and Prince to them and their heirs forever.
Item. I give and bequeath to my son Jose DANIELL three hundred acres of land lying on the Congaree River and 400 acres in a place called The Ridge and ten Negro slaves viz Buchrage and his wife Magga, and their three children, also a Negro man named Sippia and Judy his wife and their children Sarah, Stepney?, and Long Tom and Shaba, also one feather bed to him and his heirs forever.
Item. I give and bequeath to my son Levy DANIELL twenty five Negro slaves Viz: Toby, Sampson, Simon, July, Cato, Flory, Hannah, John, Mary, David, Will, Rose, Elick?, Seller?, Moses, Joe, Dan, Jack, Milly, March, Sinthy, Vamer, Old Tom, _____, Harriall, and two feather beds, furniture, also one half of the tract of land I now live on the whole of which contains three bounties. Also I lend him the use of ___ of a tract of land lying on the Ocony River in Washington County during the time of eighteen years.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Nancy DANIELL four Negro slaves viz Linder, Cary, Little Rachell, and Nancy, two feather beds and furniture and all my household furniture to her and her heirs forever. I also give her one note of hand of James TAYLOR of two hundred and forty one? pounds Sterling. I lend my wife twenty-one Negro slaves viz Tom the weaver, Hecter, Biner, George, Fillaner, Sanco, Peter, Rose, Pompey, Silvy, Acre, Driver, Rachell, Muiah, Hester, Cate, Dover, Charlotte, Zouer, Daphne, Harry. I also lend her one half of the three bounties of land I now live on together with my dwelling house and plantation. Also one half of my stock of every kind. I likewise lend her one half of my tract of land on the Oconey River in Washington County during her natural life.
Item. I give and bequeath unto William HARDAGE one Negro man Dimbo(?)
Item. I give and bequeath to my son-in-law Robert HANDRICK one tract of land on Alligator Creek which land he has my titles for. Also 50 acres of land on the Broad River to him and his heirs forever.
Item. I give and bequeath to my granddaughter Patsy HANDRICK three Negroes viz Joe, Ruker, Fillis? I also give her one half of the Negroes that I have lent to my wife after the death of my wife, to her and her heirs forever. Item. I give and bequeath to my grandson Jesse Daniell AUSTON, son of Betty AUSTON, when he comes of age, the land lying on the Oconey that I lent to my son Levi DANIELL. I also give him one half of the Negroes that I have lent to my wife after the death of my wife Nancy DANIELL. Now my will is that if either of my two grandchildren Patsey HANDRICK or Jesse Daniell AUSTON should die without lawful a heir of their bodies? that the other should heir it's estate.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Levi DANIELL after the death of my wife the balance of the three bounties whereon I now live and that half of the stock that I lent my wife during her life.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my grandson Jesse DANIELL AUSTON after the death of my wife the other half of the tract of land lying on the Oconey River. My will further is that if either of my two sons Jose DANIELL or Levi DANIELL should die without a lawful heir of their body that their estate shall go to the other and I do hereby utterly avow and disannull all other of my wills and testaments and for the prosecution? thereof. I do appoint, empower and authorize Levi DANIELL, Jose DANIELL, and William HARDWICK Jr. executors for this my last will and testament in witness whereof I do set my hand and seal this eleventh day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven.

Jesse Auston Daniell (1794-1860)
Jesse Daniell was born Jesse Auston. He was born September 9, 1794 to Betty Daniell daughter of Jesse Daniell and Nancy Hardwick. Betty was married to an Auston (first name unknown). Jesse Auston appears to have been orphaned around 1800 and was provided for out of the estate of his uncle, Levi Daniell. Payments for his care, continuing to 1815, are to John Daniel, Levi's cousin and a son of William and Lucretia Bell Daniel of Edgefield Co., South Carolina, who married Martha Pearson Cook Daniell, Levi's widow. Jesse legally changed his name in 1807 to Jesse Daniell, Georgia legislative records; that is also reflected in payments from Levi's estate. All records for him after 1807 and for his descendants are as either DANIELL or DANIEL. He is Jesse DANIELL in the military records for the War of 1812.
In 1816 he married Mary Tucker, daughter of John Robert Tucker and Ann Reese. Jesse and Mary had 10 children: male Daniell (1817), John, Arthur, Martha, Robert T., William H., Louisa C., Anabella, James, and Augustus.
In 1820 Jesse lived in Baldwin County Georgia. According to census records, he lived in Washington County, 98th District (Georgia) in 1840. By 1850 he had moved to Milledgeville, Baldwin, Georgia. In the 1850 Baldwin County GA census page 124: Jessie Daniel, 56; Mary A. 51; Anabella 15; James 12; Augustus 5.
